Chandrayaan 2 that was launched recently on 22 July 2019 would be the first ever lunar mission to explore the south pole of the moon. But the history of this mission dates back to 18th September 2008 when prime minister Manmohan Singh approved the lunar mission. The mission is developed by ISRO(Indian Space Research Organization) completely designed within India.The launcher is GSLV Mk-III is India's most powerful launcher to date. The Orbiter will observe the lunar surface and relay communication between Earth and Chandrayaan 2's Lander — Vikram. The Vikram lander is designed to execute India's first soft landing on the lunar surface. The rover is a 6-wheeled, AI-powered vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to 'wisdom' in Sanskrit. This mission costs 978 Crores (approx $141 Million) which is a fraction of the cost that other space agencies would require for a similar mission.
